Our First House: Living Room Inspiration

Our First House: Living Room Inspiration

Hi friends! I’m so excited to say we’ve officially moved into our house! It’s so surreal and I honestly think I could cry if I think about it too much. It’s going to take a while to get used to all this space and find all of my stuff that I packed super unorganized — oh, and to not be sore from moving all weekend 😆. To continue with this decor series, today I’m sharing our living room inspiration for our first house including everything from colors, to textures and pieces that will make our space equally comfortable as it is stylized!

HERE’S WHAT WE’RE THINKING

I’d say our living room is on the smaller size compared to the rest of the house, so we want to focus on making the most of the space without overcrowding it. The light wood floors turned out beautifully, and now that I see them, I’m leaning toward sticking to a light and warm color palette that will continue to brighten up the room and leave it feeling clean and cozy.

Elements we’d like to incorporate:

  • Sectional in an oatmeal or light grey color, OR a colored velvet sectional
  • Woven and fur accents
  • Large rug
  • Coffee table or ottoman
  • Baskets
  • Plants
  • Shelves for decorating
  • Framed photos, prints or decorative wall hangings in the surrounding area
  • Brass light fixture
  • Light wood floors — sneak a peek of the flooring we picked on my “Home” Instagram story highlight

Justin and I have wanted a sectional forever, so that’s something we’d still really like to get. I’m leaning toward a nice oatmeal color so the other colored accent pieces in the room will pop. I’ve had a few people recommend Wayfair to me, so I may start looking there first. In the meantime, we’ll sit on my old couch from college — that thing is a trooper! Oh, and alternatively, I’d consider a fun colored velvet couch as well.

I feel like anyone can look like a professional decorator with plants thrown into the space. It’s amazing how something so simple can make a room look put together, even for people who don’t consider themselves to be good at interior design. I only have one floor plant now, so I’d like to get my hands on some more to sprinkle throughout our house.

Baskets are always a go-to for me because they look cute while also providing me with ample storage. I have a couple large ones already that I can insporate into the room, so I likely won’t need to purchase any more of these. I have a huge one from a collaboration with Serena & Lily that is such a life saver for clutter!

For me, a huge factor in making a space feel cozy is texture. I plan to include lots of woven and fur accents throughout the room to dress it up and truly make it feel like home. I’m a sucker for a soft blanket and comfy pillow, so expect to see a lot of that in our space! I have plenty left over from our apartment, so I’m excited too see how they’ll look here.

I’m torn whether I want a coffee table or ottoman, but I’m sure that will become more clear once we get the couch we want. We like to have somewhere to prop our feet up and also put drinks on, so we’ve been using a giant ottoman with a wooden tray on it, which is kind of the best of both worlds. Which do you prefer?

As for the light fixture, I’m leaning toward something brass to tie in with the kitchen pendants we bought. I like the mid-century look with the exposed bulbs, so I’m thinking we’re going that route. Light fixtures are something I really like shopping for, but I have a hard time committing to sometimes. That’s probably because you don’t really know what it’s going to look like in your house until it’s up. I plan to order one within the next couple days!

Thanks so much for swinging by the blog today! I can’t wait to finish unpacking and putting everything together. The electrician is at our house installing some lights, so I’m anxious to see how the pendant lights over our bar look.
