Our First House: Dining Room Inspiration

Our First House: Dining Room Inspiration

Welcome back to the blog! As we pack up and make the full transition of moving into our new house this week (a full blog post on buying our house with pictures and videos is coming soon), I’m working on finding pieces to fill the rooms we haven’t had in our one bedroom apartment for the last two years — one being the dining room. We’ve eaten on our couch for so long now that I can’t even imagine having a space to we can utilize for eating meals at a table, but here we are! Keep reading for what we plan to do with our first ever dining space.

HERE’S WHAT WE’RE THINKING

Of course, I want our dining area to be somewhere we can sit comfortably to enjoy our meals every day, and it would be great if we had room for guests too. I want it to be well styled, but still be completely functional and practical for us with nothing that can get too easily stained or dirty. I think a simple centerpiece with items we can exchange out here and there to mix it up as the seasons change is the perfect way to style the space, as well as a few other decorative touches throughout.

Elements we’d like to incorporate:

  • Rectangular table, likely a wooden look
  • “Basket” light fixture
  • Large rug — either jute or something patterned (I loved the layered look too, so maybe both)
  • 4-6 chairs
  • A plant or two nearby
  • Simplistic centerpiece (plant, vase, fruit, etc.)
  • Framed photos, prints or decorative wall hangings in the surrounding area
  • Light wood floors — sneak a peek of the flooring we picked on my “Home” Instagram story highlight

I’m pretty sure of how I want to decorate this space outside of the exact table and chairs I want. I feel like I’ll know what I want when I see it, but I know for sure that I want something affordable. Large furniture pieces like this can get pricey very fast, so I want to focus on staying on budget. Is there a particular place you recommend buying a table and chairs from or is there a set you really love? Help a girl out!

I want a rug underneath the table to help separate to space (the kitchen, dining area and living room are open concept) to bring color to the space, so I’ve started hunting for the perfect one. I’ve heard a lot of great things about rugsusa.com, so I plan to check there once we get the table so I know what size to get. A lot of these ones below are from OFF 5TH and they are beautiful!

One thing I’ve been set on from the beginning is a basket/rattan light fixture over the table. That’s one of the main elements I pictured in our first house since we started looked, so now I’m just browsing around to find one that’s right for the space. I like the idea of having a few smaller ones hung in a cluster, but I’m leaning toward getting just one larger one. We’ll see!

As for decorative elements, I think an assortment of vases would be really pretty. Knowing me, I’ll need to get fake plants and greenery to put in them because I kill everything!

That’s pretty much it! Let me know if you have any recommendations & be sure to follow along with our house updates on my Instagram. Have an amazing day!
