Our First House: Office Inspiration

Hi everyone — I hope you had a great weekend! This is one of the last home inspiration posts I’ve done because this is the one room that’s a huge question mark for me: our office. Our office is located in the largest of our two spare bedrooms, a rectangular-shaped room with lots of options. Maybe too many options. Keep reading for what we plan to do with our office space in our first home!

HERE’S WHAT WE’RE THINKING

We want two, separate functional workspaces that are cohesive and fit our individual needs. For me, my desk doubles as a vanity because it’s where I sit to do my hair & makeup every single morning. Honestly, it gets used as a vanity more than a workspace. I think that’s why I’ve been so stumped on how I want to decorate it, and it shows because it’s the only room in our house that is completely out of whack! I know we’ve only lived here a few months, but I’ve barely touched it, you guys. 😬

Luckily, Justin and I both already have chairs and matching desks, so at least that’s taken care of. Justin uses his desk all the time to grade papers, write lesson plans and play video games on his computer. My original thought was to have our desks meet at the center of the room for a collaborative-style space, but seeing that we use our desks for totally different things and are rarely in there at the same time, I’m seeing that this may not be the best layout — we’ll see!

Elements we’re planning to incorporate:

  • Matching light wood desks (we already have these)
  • Two office chairs (we have these as well)
  • Brass, well-lit light fixture
  • Organizational drawers and shelves (LOTS!)
  • Maybe a rug for warmth + coziness
  • Larger workspace for Justin, if needed

MY SIDE

I want my side to serve as a really functional and organizational space because with balancing a full-time job, blogging and freelance design work, my schedule/workload can get hectic and messy quick. Justin got me a large wall calendar for Christmas that I’d been wanting and I’m so excited to implement it this year. I’m old school in the sense that I NEED to write things down — whether it’s on paper or a list on my computer, it’s 100% necessary for me.

I also want something that I can store papers, makeup, my camera equipment for blogging and other things (i.e. organizational drawers and shelves). I prefer to have these things put away out of sight to keep things minimal, but I’m not sure how I want to do that yet. I’m thinking a freestanding set of shelves or a cart with shelves on wheels that I can move around. What do you think?

Below is what I’m thinking color-wise for my side — definitely feminine and delicate, nothing too bright.

After looking through Pinterest to gather some inspiration, I’m thinking I’d like to add a large mirror on the wall to better utilize when doing my hair each morning. Right now I use a smaller free-standing one that’s meant for makeup application, and I think it could be nice to have a larger one.

__________

That’s pretty much all I’ve come up with so far (lol). As you can see, I’m a little lost when it comes to our office (I’m getting there, I think!), so let me know if you have any recommendations or tips! I’ll keep you guys updated on the progress of the room and things we buy for it. Thanks so much for reading & see you in Wednesday’s post!
