How to Write the Most Effective About Me Page

How to Write the Most Effective About Me Page

Hi friends! Today’s post is another blogging-related one discussing how to construct a key component of every blog: the About Me page. Your About Me page is what introduces your readers to who you are, where you come from, who your blog is geared toward and how you’ve gotten to where you are today. These are all things any and every reader wants to know before taking a real interest in you and your blog, so these are my tips on how to write the most effective About Me page to connect with and captivate your audience.

First, here’s a look at mine.

How to Write the Most Effective About Me Page

DO INCLUDE:

Name and age.
This is the most basic info that will help the reader get a general idea of who you are. If you’re feeling insecure about including your age, regardless if you’re “young” or “old,” don’t be! There is a market out there that’s your age and will find comfort in knowing you’re in the same age group. In fact, they may prefer your advice and insight over someone else’s outside of their age group, so don’t be afraid to put that out there.

Where you live, where you’re from, where you went to school, etc.
I’m sure I’m not alone is stating that everyone wants to know details! A quick mention of where you’re from, where you’re currently based and what college you went to (if any) quickly helps the rider get an understanding of your background and where in the world your voice is coming from.

What you do for a living.
Again, this is another piece that will help your readers further connect with you. You don’t have to be specific about where you work, but including the field you work in is enough. If you don’t blog full-time (which most of us don’t) it’s nice to know how you spend your 40 hours a week, or whatever your situation is.

Spouse & kids if you have them.
This gives a general basis of where you’re at in life. Again, you can be more private with this if you want, but a huge part of blogging is letting the public into a part of your life in whatever capacity you choose, so I think it’s nice to mention if you’re married, a mother, etc., giving readers yet another way to relate to you.

How long you’ve been blogging.
This is always one of my top questions anytime I come across a new blogger to follow! Sometimes you can’t tell by the quality of someone’s blog if they’ve been in the industry for three months or three years, so knowing this helps you understand their history and how far they’ve come.

Brands you’ve worked with.
I love seeing the growth of people’s blogs and the accomplishments they’ve made (whether they’re big or small), so including this information lets people know the brands you love and support, as well as how brand-focused you content is or isn’t.

The kind of content you post.
Readers want to know what to expect from you and if you produce the kind of content they’re personally interested in, so  a quick mention of what you plan to share on your blog gives some great insight.

DON’T:

Sound like someone else wrote it about you.
Write in first person because this is a platform showcasing your writing and your voice, so it should sound like it. Be personable and casual while still getting your message/information across.

Copy someone else’s work.
Your About Me page is one of the most personal things you can write about yourself, so it should be completely organic and in your own words. This isn’t something that can be pulled from a template and no matter how long or brief your’s ends up being, it should be totally unique to you and representative of who you are as an individual.
