Pupdate: Lucia’s Breed DNA Results

Pupdate: Lucia's Breed DNA Results

The results are in! We finally submitted Lucia’s DNA to a service that identifies what breeds she’s made up of, which has been a big question of ours since the day we brought her home. Keep reading for an update on her, what our breed guesses were and what her results revealed!

GUESSES

Everyone seems to have some kind of assumption of what they think Lucia might be. We have heard so many different guesses, especially from strangers when we take Lucia out in public. After we submitted her DNA sample, we surveyed all of our friends and family and the top guess were (keep in mind that she’s a medium-sized dog and is predicted to not get bigger than 40 lbs according to our vet):

  • Dalmation
  • Greyhound
  • Jack Russell terrier or some other type of terrier
  • Collie of some sort
  • Lab
  • Beagle

My guesses were Jack Russell terrier and some type of collie. We were so antsy to get her results in and finally have an answer to our curiosity!

THE RESULTS

As part of my birthday gift about a month ago, Justin submitted Lucia’s saliva swab to a service called Wisdom Panel. If you use the same one, note that it will take a few weeks to process the sample and generate results, so just be patient. Now, let’s get into the results.

Needless to say, we’re shocked! My guess about collie and maybe lab were correct, but the rest are such a surprise! I was honestly hoping she was a mix of just a couple breeds so we could recreate her one day if we wanted to (lol — kinda kidding), but she’s got a lot going on. Doberman surprises me the most since that’s such a large bread that’s standardly black and Lucia is all white, but this proves that you just never truly know! All we know is that Lucia is the most perfect little combo for our family. 😉

UPDATE

We truly love her more and more every day, if that’s even possible. 7 months in, she knows her routine and she’s good at it. We transitioned to feeding her twice a day instead of three times at 6 months, and she was confused and honestly kind of bratty for a couple days, but she figured it out. She still has a lot of energy, but she’s able to sleep a lot of the day too if needed. I can’t remember if I mentioned this in her last update, but she sleeps with us on Saturday nights and we look forward to it all week. She has also gotten more spots with age, but they’re pretty much just on her skin and haven’t made their way to the surface — she looks very spotted when she’s wet because of that! I mentioned this on Instagram, but she comes and cuddles in bed with me after Justin leaves for work in the morning and it’s my favorite thing. She is seriously the sweetest pup!

For memory purposes when I look back on this post one day, here are some of Lucia’s current favorites:

  • Crinkle toys
  • Staring at herself in the mirror
  • Sprinting in circles in our yard when Justin waves our fire poker 😂
  • Peanut butter. Always.
  • Horse videos
  • Cuddling between Justin and me — or on top of us if we’re cuddling each other
  • WALKS
  • Playing with other dogs — which she has now figured out how to do and it’s so cute how excited she gets!
  • Going wild for the oven mitt
  • Riding the paddle board at my parents’ house (she has a little lifejacket and everything 😆)

__________

That’s our little update on Lucia and her breed! I don’t know how accurate these kind of tests are, but regardless, it’s interesting (and fun!) to see the results. If you’ve done this for your pets, I’d love to hear about your experience. I hope you enjoyed this little update & have a great weekend!
