6 Qualities That Will Make You a Great Blogger

Thinking about starting a blog but don’t know if you have what it takes? I’m sharing the six qualities that will make you a great blogger and how to improve on those traits as you progress with your blog!

Creativity
I’d say creativity is the biggest and most important quality when it comes to blogging. Since blogging is essentially a plethora of content creating and brand management, it’s highly beneficial to have a creative mind that allows you to constantly come up with new, fresh and exciting ideas to execute. Being willing to step outside of the box and be different helps a ton too!

Drive
You have to want it and be capable of being your own boss (not just want to be your own boss, you have to be capable of doing so) to be successful. You’ve got to stick to a schedule, be consistent and not drop off the map every other week leaving your readers/followers wondering where you went. You’ve got to pursue collaborations, pitch yourself and work super hard to make it in this industry. No one is going to want it for you, so you have to want it for yourself and put in the time. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m so happy with how far I’ve come over the past two and a half years with drive and determination.

6 Qualities That Will Make You a Great Blogger

Personal style
Whether you’re going into fashion blogging, beauty or lifestyle, having your own personal style and flair will help you to stand out in the crowd. Everything you do should be totally unique to you and the brand you’re building for yourself. People should be able to get a sense of who you are in every single blog and social media post you publish. Figure out your identity online, stay true to yourself and run with it!

A unique voice
Have you been on a handful of blogs where each feels like they were written by the same person? This is a huge no-no! I’ve seen so many writing styles where blog posts consist of only “This outfit is super cute and on sale! What did you guys do this weekend?” These kind of posts tell the reader nothing about who you are or what your personality is. There’s no meat to these kind of posts — substance is important! Your personality and unique voice is what is going to keep people coming back, so always put focus on that.

Relateability
Everyone wants to feel like they’re not alone and that there are other people out there going through the same experiences they are, so share those with your readers. There always needs to be an element of transparency. Buying clothes you can’t afford and pretending you’ve never had a hard day in your life is glamorous for sure, but not realistic. I try my best to share these things as often as possible because I find relationship building and honesty to be incredibly important.

Personable
To help your blog be more successful, you’ve got to be comfortable talking to people about it. Being approachable, outgoing and friendly will help hugely in this area. If you’re shy and introverted like me, this can be tough, so this is always something I’m working on. I’m not someone who likes to blab on and on about my blog because I don’t ever want to seem conceded or sound like I’m bragging, so I totally get why this can be tough. Also, when your blog starts to gain more traction, you may be invited to local blogging events where networking is important. This is a skill that many of us have to learn and work on, so it can be a process!
